The math, without the mix-up
Profit amount = selling price − cost.
Margin = profit ÷ selling price × 100. It describes the share of the sale price.
Markup = profit ÷ cost × 100. It describes the increase on cost.
Target price = cost ÷ (1 − margin/100), or cost × (1 + markup/100).
Conversion: markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin/100); margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup/100).
Amounts and percentages display to 2 decimal places; calculations use unrounded values. Target prices are estimates, not cent-rounded guarantees. Negative profit and percentages indicate a loss. Cost and selling price cannot be negative. Zero sale makes margin undefined; zero cost makes markup undefined. Zero-cost target pricing is not supported.
This is arithmetic, not financial advice or a forecast. Results only reflect the costs you include: overhead, taxes, fees, returns and other expenses are not added automatically. Do not treat this as net profit unless all relevant costs are included.
